Men have started a striking trend of painting one fingernail, and the reason behind it is both admirable and impactful.

Men are choosing to paint one or more fingernails on their hands, and the color they select can vary from one individual to another.
While some men take it a step further by adding designs on top of the color, the core message behind this trend remains consistent.
This movement among men originated in Australia but is now gaining traction among forward-thinking individuals in the United States.
The inspiration for this initiative came from Elliot Costello, who was traveling with a group called Hagar International. During his travels, he met a young girl named Thea, who left a profound impression on him and inspired him to paint his nail and promote the idea further.
Elliot and his group had journeyed to Cambodia with the intention of making a positive impact on the lives of the people there. However, it was the smallest villager, Thea, who had the most significant impact on Elliot. He learned about a widespread issue affecting children worldwide, including the United States, not just in Cambodia.

Elliot took the time to connect with Thea, engaging with her in ways that brought her joy. Nail polish was something she enjoyed, so they painted each other’s nails while discussing her life and the challenges she had faced. During their conversation, Elliot discovered that Thea had been a victim of sexual abuse.
He made a heartfelt promise to Thea as she painted one of his nails: “I assured her I would always keep it that way to remember her, and by extension, her suffering.”
This touching encounter renewed Elliot’s determination to bring about positive change among men to protect children from sexual abuse. It was during this time that he conceived the idea for the Polished Man project, challenging men to spend a week painting one fingernail to become a #PolishedMan.
The single painted nail on a hand of five represents the one in five children who will become victims of sexual violence.
Polished Man is an organization dedicated to ending sexual violence against children. It states that being a Polished Man means confronting violent behavior and language, both locally and globally. Recognizing that men are responsible for 96% of such violence against children worldwide, Elliot believed that men must be the driving force for change if we are to see an end to the abuse of innocent children.

The ultimate goal is not just for people to notice a man with a painted nail but for it to spark conversations about this distressing reality. Elliot hopes that these conversations will lead to new ideas to combat the issue and potentially result in donations to support educational programs and resources for child survivors of abuse.
