A magnificent moment: a sperm whale comes up to a diver and “asks” for the hook to be removed

Sperm Whales are among the most magnificent and interesting species on the planet.

They have the biggest brain of any surviving or extinct creature, weighing up to 17 pounds.

These clever animals are deep divers who can be observed sometimes on the surface.

Hugues Vitry, a world-renowned diver, assisted a sperm whale with a fishing hook caught in its jaw.

The whale approached Vitry and, in its own manner, appealed for his assistance.

Vitry investigates the sperm whale species in the Indian Ocean. Sperm whales travel all year and may be found all around the planet.

Every year, whales come to Vitry’s site, including one he has known for over a decade.

Sperm whales eat meat and have huge teeth. The fishing hook was embedded in the mandible of one of the whale’s teeth.

When the creature floated up to Vitry, he realized something was wrong.

The creature’s mouth was completely open, but there was no squid around for it to devour.

He then spotted blood pouring from his mouth. He looked more closely straight away.

And the whale remained calm during the entire process of removing the hook.

Vitry had to apply a lot of power. The whale didn’t move until it was all done.

Vitry touched the creature on the head to tell it that the hook was no longer in its mouth.

The whale remained for a long, whirling in front of the diver as if to thank Vitry for his assistance.
